Boeing Flight Operations Symposium
October 29 – October 31, 2002
Seattle, Washington
747 Caucus Summary Report
AIRPLANE GENERAL
1. On 747, why not fuel with door 3 open?
<ANSWER> See AMM Ch 12; door may not be able to be closed if you do this.
2. Conversely, will it open if fueled closed?
<ANSWER> Yes, the door is certified to open with any airplane loading.
3. The VAA ops spec has a 10-kt autoland crosswind limitation. VAA POI in U.S. (JFK) says Washington DC makes the rules. Any suggestions?
<ANSWER> The AFM has a 25-knot autoland crosswind limitation. It is not uncommon for operators in conjunction with their POI to specify a more restrictive crosswind limitation for low visibility operations. This is normally accounted for with all weather operations at and below CAT II approaches. Regarding the present limitation in the AFM, the 25 knot crosswind only applies when the operator requires autoland because of low visibility operations. Bottom-line, with regards to autoland it is certified for 25 knots for low visibility conditions. Our only suggestion was to take the AFM to discuss with the POI.
ANTI-ICE, RAIN
4. A customer has a problem with their fleet, basically Airbus-driven. Airbus OM wording says that if NAI is used, WAI is also used. What is TBC position?
<ANSWER> Boeing does not agree that WAI is needed whenever NAI is used. The operations manual states:
Wing Anti–Ice Operation The wing anti–ice system may be used as a deicer or anti–icer in flight only. The primary method is to use it as a deicer by allowing ice to accumulate before turning wing anti–ice on. This procedure provides the cleanest airfoil surface, the least possible runback ice formation, and the least thrust and fuel penalty. The secondary method is to use wing anti-ice prior to ice accumulation. Operate the wing anti–ice system as an anti–icer only during extended operations in moderate or severe icing conditions. Ice accumulation on the flight deck window frames, windshield center post, or windshield wiper arm, or side windows may be used as an indication of structural icing conditions and the need to turn on wing anti–ice. 1 January 2003
