Airbus EFB is built on the extensive experience
gained from the ‘Less Paper in the Cockpit’
(LPC) solution. It can host:

FlySmart with Airbus provides a
comprehensive EFB solution. It
comprises a common set of applications
with a homogeneous look and feel, and a
common set of ground tools for the
management of information onboard Airbus
aircraft. Airbus EFB is supported by a modular
and flexible airborne infrastructure based on
fully integrated hardware (Class 3*).
It can also be hosted on partially integrated
platforms (Class 1 or 2*).

...at the right time…
Pilots can prepare and operate their missions
from beginning to end in a safe and efficient way.
With the new A380 concept, of ‘contextual
access’, only the necessary FCOM information is
displayed to the crew when an event is detected
by the avionics system. In addition,
complementary applications can be launched
automatically (e.g. the Landing module) to globally
manage the event.
The Captain and First Officer can cross-check
their data and work on the same task on their
respective EFBs.
Airbus EFB solutions can also communicate with
the outside world via open technology
communications such as Gatelink, Cellular-
GSM/GPRS and SATCOM.

For pilots, Airbus has developed a fully integrated
hardware (Class 3*) based on advanced and open
architecture, within the Airbus cockpit
environment. The EFB display is harmoniously
integrated within the cockpit and is fully operable
both on ground and during all flight phases.

towards a paperless cockpit.

A wide range of benefits
The electronic dispatch, update and consultation
of operational documents contributes to:
 Reduce revision and update dispatch times
 Improve technical data accuracy
 Reduce the documentation dispatch and
management costs
E-performance modules enable significant
savings due to:
 Fast integration of last-minute changes
(e.g. runway length reduction, meteorological
events), which could otherwise cause delays
 Accurate calculation of performance, which
eliminates the conservatism which has to
be built into traditional TOW tables, and
can increase maximum takeoff weight by
as much as 1,000 kg which increases

LPC management
LPC involves both a ground and onboard
element:
 An LPC administrator uses ground tools
to prepare the information used in the
cockpit by the flight crew.
 Flight crews use airborne tools to access
to the information dispatched by the EFB
administrator and relevant to each specific
aircraft (tailored for each registration number).
Regulation status
The Airbus LPC applications suite installed
on a laptop has already been approved by several
Aviation Authorities (JAA, FAA, TCCA) as
an EFB Class 1* compliant solution.

Application scope
The eLogbook serves two main groups within an airline :
 Flight operations (standard defect reporting)
 Line maintenance and maintenance control
centre (aircraft status management and
recording of maintenance tasks)

AIRMAN taking advantage of its troubleshooting

technical logbook, the eLogbook delivers:

Capture of standardized
logbook entries
The pilot enters standardized pilot reports via an intuitive
and user-friendly interface. Free text is also possible.
When validated, the reports can be transmitted to the
ground and are then available within the central database
AIRMAN for further analysis.
Follow-up of aircraft technical
status
The logbook status page provides a synthesized view
of the aircraft technical status with:
 Status of the flight
 Standardized defect status
 Status of the maintenance release
Full integration and data
synchronization with AIRMAN
The maintenance team can also consult the aircraft status
within AIRMAN and benefit from AIRMAN’s expertise to
solve the defects.
High level of customization for
operating mode and basic
reports
Basic reports can be customized depending on airline
policy. Parameters such as fuel on board, anti-icing
can be easily recorded.

The onboard network architecture comprise:
 Electronic displays
 Network access socket
 Aircraft/ground communication link
 Server units
Flexible, FlySmart with Airbus architecture enables
you to configure and select the part you need.
Electronic displays
Airbus developed a fully integrated (Class 3*) terminal
for pilots, in accordance with the Airbus cockpit
environment.
It is designed not to hide and not to attract the eyes
versus the other cockpit instruments when the pilot is
seated at the reference pilot eye position.
Each onboard integrated terminal consists of:
 One display unit with touch screen and
 One processing unit
 In addition, one keyboard unit and integrated
pointing device are installed in the cockpit
The Airbus EFB applications can also be hosted on
partially integrated platforms (Class 1 or 2*).
Network access
The Network access provides pilots with wired and
wireless connection to access the EFB servers on the
aircraft. These access points are:
 USB ports to allow pilots to upload and download data
to and from their EFB. This also allows the connection of
a printer or any other device (DVD, CD drivers,…). These
ports are located on the Airbus Class 3* display unit.

 RJ45 plugs to connect computers to the EFB
on board network (pilot or airline laptop,
DVD,…). These connectors are located on the
Captain’s and First Officer’s lateral panels.
Other connectors are located close to the
third occupant station, and cabin door 1.
 Cabin Wireless LAN Unit (CWLU) to connect
wireless-enabled mobile computers to the EFB
on board network during flight and on the
ground (pilots, cabin and maintenance crews
laptop). Three CWLUs are provided to cover the
communication within the aircraft
Aircraft/ground
communication
Airbus EFB solutions can communicate with your
ground-based airline information system in order
to allow the easy transfer of data for flight
operations and EFB update and maintenance
purposes.
For on ground communication, the Terminal
Wireless LAN Unit (TWLU) provides wireless
communication in accordance with ARINC 763
and based on 802.11 standard between the
aircraft and the airport wireless terminal
(Gatelink).
In-flight communications are supported by
SATCOM in narrow band (2.4 / 9.6 Kbps) and
wider band (64 Kbps and future evolutions),
via the L-band INMARSAT satellite network.
Airbus is also developing solutions based on
mobile telecommunications technology
(GSM/GPRS/UMTS).
