OIT content summary :
• First and foremost, advice and recommendations of local
medical authorities must be sought
• Aircraft Maintenance Manual references given for standard
(aircraft compatible) disinfectants
• If non-standard products are to be used, specific advice given
on precautions for structure & furnishing materials
• E-mail contacts given for specific advice from the World Health
Organisation
• No specific operational recommendations, it is not
recommended to operate with the cabin fans off

Cabin Airflow Design Principles
• Air enters at the top and exits downward and produces no longitudinal
airflow. Air from one person passes another at floor level only.
• The combination of outside air and filtered
recirculated air produces a flowrate that
removes cabin generated contaminants fast
and raises humidity
• Extracted air flows to the outflow
valve and to the recirculation filters
• Airbus aircraft use high efficiency recirculation
filters with no bypass capability - all recirculated air is filtered.
• Ventilation air used for galleys, toilets, cargo holds and avionics
compartments is vented overboard. It is not recirculated.

Cabin re-circulation fan operation :
• Augments cabin air relative humidity, reduces rate of
drying of nose/eyes/throat
• Optimises cabin temperature comfort
•Maximises air exchange rate
• With HEPA filters, the cabin air can have less particulate
content than air from outside
All Airbus production aircraft have HEPA filters

Cabin air filters :
•Made of micro glass fibre, highly efficient filtration with low
pressure drop
• Reduce risk by removing dust, mold spores, bacteria and
viruses
• Utilize three different capture mechanisms with a collection
efficiency greater than 99.97%
• Virus size range 0.01 to 0.2 microns.
• Corona virus size is 0.08 to 0.12 microns
• Virus survival time is very low, due lack of live human cells

Inertial impaction:
Smaller particles tend to impact the
filter material rather than following the
tortuous path through the media.
Diffusional interception:
Very small particles undergo considerable motion, which increases the
probability to be retained by molecular forces
Direct interception:
Interception of all particles which
are bigger than the pore size.

Conclusion
• Operators must comply with the recommendations of local
medical authorities
• No specific change in aircraft operational procedures
• Airbus maintains close links with the World Health
Organisation and will continue to provide information
updates as appropriate
