Field Experience : Stage 1
• One case of stage 1 Booster Vane was identified with two damaged areas
on the outer shroud coating during on-wing routine inspection (periodic
Fan Blade lubrication)
 TSN/CSN : 8,311 hours / 2,875 cycles
 One area extends from 40 mm (1.575 in) long to 20 mm (0.787 in)
wide at 7 o’clock position and other from 150 mm (5.906 in) long to
20 mm (0.787 in) wide at 6 o’clock position
– Damages were found within AMM limits - Total affected surface
is equal to 40 cm2 (100 cm2 is permitted without in-service
restriction)
 No FOD event reported

Field Experience : Stage 1
• One new case of stage 1 Booster Vane was found with either missing
or flaking material close to 6 o’clock position on the outer shroud
coating (periodic Fan Blade lubrication)
– TSN/CSN : 12,312 hrs / 6,544 cycles
– Damage was found within AMM limits
– Second Engine installed in position #2 exhibits similar condition
 Engine #1 initially operated by another customer
 Engine experienced a birdstrike in July 1997
» BSI performed and condition was found satisfactory

Field Experience: Stage 4
• Booster Vane from PCA engine 874120 coating missing at 6 o’clock
 TSN/CSN : 7,733 hrs / 6,145 cycles
 EDS analysis evidenced presence of significant rate Cl, S & Na
– Tap water content highly suspected (damages after water wash)
• One case of Booster Vane (Stages 1, 3, 4) was found with local
flaking on the outer shroud coating during engine overhaul
 TSN/CSN : 9,416 hours / 3,784 cycles
 Damage was found out of ESM limits
 Root cause demonstrated to be incorrect engine preservation after shop
visit

One engine found with Booster Vanes showing eroded / missing material on
the outer shroud coating
 TSN/CSN : 9,233 hrs / 3,180 cycles
 Stage 1 = Erosion
 Stage 4 = Unknown
 Not expertized yet

Investigation
• Engineering activity has been launched on PCA engine 875-201 currently in
disassembly phase
 Visual inspection already revealed flaking on Stage 1
– Results expected by end of Feb 2002
• Evaluation of chemical products impacts on abradable aging
 High chlorine rate in tap water
 Engine cleaning products
