RVSM OPERATIONS IN-FLIGHT CONTINGENCY PROCEDURES
Problems Maintaining Altitude Due to
Severe Turbulence or Mountain Wave Activity
Severe turbulence — Tell ATC you are unable RVSM
— ATC will apply vectors for separation
Mountain wave activity with altitude deviations of:
• 200 feet or more — Tell ATC you are unable RVSM
— ATC will apply vectors for separation
• Less than 200 feet — You can still maintain RVSM
— You may request vectors for separation
Failure of the Altitude Hold, the Altitude
Alerting System, or All Primary Altimeters
Notify ATC of the failure
Repeat notifi cation to ATC on initial contact on each new frequency
ATC will apply 2,000-foot vertical separation or appropriate
horizontal separation
Request clearance to leave RVSM airspace unless your
operational situation requires otherwise
Failure of One Primary Altimetry System
Cross-check the remaining altimeter with the standby altimeter
Couple the functioning system to your altitude hold
Notify ATC you are operating with only one primary altimeter
RVSM can still be applied
If unable to confi rm the accuracy of the remaining altimeter, follow
the procedure for Failure of All Primary Altimeters
Indications on Primary Altimetry Systems
Differ by More Than 200 Feet
Follow the procedure for Failure of One Primary Altimetry System
Follow the procedure for Failure of All Primary Altimeters
PREFLIGHT CHECKLIST
Defects in required equipment — corrected
Static sources — not clogged
Surrounding skin — checked for dents, ice, and chipping or
bubbling paint
Pitot tubes — checked for bends or clogs
All altimeters — set to local setting
Each altimeter — reading within 75 feet of fi eld elevation
Two primary altimeters — reading within Airplane Flight Manual limits
IN-FLIGHT CHECKLIST
Altitude hold — working properly
Altitude alerter — working properly
Primary altimeters — reading within 200 feet of each other
At transition altitude — all altimeters set to 29.92
Level off — overshoot no more than 150 feet
Altimeters — cross-check at beginning of cruise fl ight and hourly
— record at least initial cross-check
RVSM NUMBERS
72 hours Time to submit Flight Level Deviation Report
75 feet Maximum difference between altimeters and fi eld
elevation
150 feet Maximum assigned fl ight level overshoot
200 feet Maximum difference between primary altimeter readings
245 feet Maximum Altimetry System Error
300 feet Maximum Assigned Altitude Deviation or Total
Vertical Error
1,000 fpm Recommended maximum rate of climb or descent, last
1,000 feet
1,000 feet RVSM vertical separation
2,000 feet Vertical separation of RVSM aircraft from
non-RVSM aircraft
MINIMUM EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
• 2 Independent Primary Altimetry Systems
• Altitude Alerting System
• Altitude Hold System
Unable to determine defective system
Able to determine defective system
