Working as cabin crew you will notice that there is a common aviation language used within the airline industry. In this module you will learn new phrases, abbreviations and terms used.

The airline industry use the 24 hour clock in all timetables, rosters, departure times etc. The 24 hour clock is used so people don't mix up A.M. and P.M. times. A.M. is everything between midnight and noon; P.M. is everything between noon and midnight. Whilst working as a cabin crew member you need to be confident and fully conversant using this time method. Here is how the 24 hour clock works: 1 R; a; m$ s9 n$ @2 ?- G a+ n/ H

Aeroplane – means an engine-driven fixed wing aircraft heavier than air that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its wings.

# S9 ^. h5 a J' n ?8 h1 S; BAircraft Flight Manual (AFM) - A JAA approved document that contains information required to operate the aircraft at the level of safety established by the aircrafts certification basis. 5 @1 {* z) ~0 [' I! i
Aircraft Operating Manual (AOM) - The part of the operations manual describing in detail the characteristics and operation of the aircraft and its systems.
: v/ D5 y: N5 M3 D, Z" LAircraft – Means a machine that can derive support in the atmosphere from the reactions of the air other than the reactions of the air against the earth’s surface. 3 f6 g- z* Q$ W$ U* z1 P
Air Operator Certificate (AOC) – A certificate authorising an operator to carry out specified commercial air transport operations. ( r6 \" g G6 z! w' J6 K9 h
Alternate Airport – Means an airport at which an aircraft may land if a landing at the intended airport becomes inadvisable. $ z, X' o4 d4 w; } B
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) - means any gas turbine-powered unit delivering rotating shaft power, compressor air, or both which is not intended for direct propulsion of an aircraft.

Belly Landing – Is a landing without the main landing-gear extended. / j- Q) n2 a! W% I+ y9 F5 q! C

Bulkhead – Is a partition or wall divider.

0 C0 ?$ y& q" p( ACommander – The pilot designated by the operator to be in command of the aircraft. Co-pilot – A member of the flight crew acting in any piloting capacity, other than as pilot-in-command or commander.

Ditching – Is landing on water.
