PART 5 – ANNEX H
National Annex - Germany
1. Introduction. Germany operates two tanker types. The PA 200 Tornado in a buddy/ buddy tanker configuration and the Airbus A310-MRTT.
2. Tanker Aircraft Types
2.1. PA 200 Tornado (buddy/buddy)
a. AAR Equipment. The PA 200 TORNADO can be fitted with a Sargent Fletcher buddy-buddy refuelling pod at the centreline fuselage station. The extended hose has a length of 15.2 m (50 ft). To open the refuelling valve the hose has to be pushed back in approximately 2 m (6 ft); however, the forward limit is reached when only 2 marker rings remain visible. During refuelling operations, hose tension is maintained automatically. The diameter of the drogue is 710 mm. Recommended closing speed for contact is 3 – 4 KIAS, but is not to exceed 7 KIAS. If contact speed is in excess of 7 KIAS the possible resulting hose-whip may break off the receivers probe tip or in an extreme case, damage the tankers refuelling equipment or airframe. Diagrams of the Tornado refuelling equipment is at Appendix 1.
b. Refuelling Heights and Speeds. Tanker operations are cleared for altitudes from sea level up to 28,000 ft. Optimum altitude band for refuelling is 5,000 ft to 20,000 ft. The speed range is from 230 to 320 KIAS/0.75 Mach with an optimum speed of 270 KIAS.
c. Maximum Transferable Fuel. 5,500 kg (12,000 lb) under optimum conditions, but not more than 3,400 kg (7,500 lb) per contact.
d. Fuel Transfer Rate. Transfer rate is 300 kg/min (650 lbs/min) to 600 kg/min (1,300 lbs/min), depending on receiver aircraft.
e. Regulated Fuel Pressure. Fuel pressure at the drogue is regulated to 50 ± 5 psi.
f. Fuel Types Available for AAR. Primary fuel is F-34. F-35 and F-40 are cleared as alternative fuels
g. Receiver Types Certified. See Appendix 7.
h. Lighting. A set of three coloured lights each side of the pod’s tail-cone act as indicators to the receiver for the following:
Amber The hose is extended and the pod system is ready for receiver engagement and fuel transfer.
Green Fuel is flowing from the pod to the receiver aircraft.
Steady Red Do not make contact. The hose may be winding or trailing.
Flashing Red Break contact immediately.
Three floodlights, located at the pod’s tail, illuminate the underside of the tankers fuselage when the hose unwinds.

i. Mark Facilities. The aircraft is fitted with strobe lighting and is capable of fuel dump.
j. Dimensions. See aircraft drawing at Appendix 2.
k. RV Aids. The aircraft has the following radio, navigation and RV aids:
(1) VHF, UHF, HF and HQII radios.
(2) Tacan, Doppler and LINS/GPS.
(3) Air-to-Air Tacan (DME only).
l. Limitations
(1) Maximum operating time with the hose extended is 45 min. If an interval of 15 min or more is expected between a series of contacts, the hose will be rewound and the pod shut down.
(2) Only 3 complete hose extension/retraction cycles per hour are permitted.
(3) Tanker airspeed changes, with hose extended, must be kept within 10 KIAS. For speed changes greater than 10 KIAS, the hose needs to be rewound and then trailed at the new speed. Receiver aircraft must stay clear of the hose during this operation.
(4) HF transmissions by the tanker are not permitted when receiver aircraft are within 150 ft (50 m) tanker.
2.2. Airbus A310 MRTT
a. AAR Equipment. The aircraft is equipped with two under wing mounted AAR pods located about 3,5 m (12 ft) from the wing tips. The FRL MK 32B-907E pod incorporates an MA 4 coupling and a fixed drogue type. Hose length is 24 m (79 ft) at full trail. To attain fuel flow, the hose must be pushed in at least 2 m (7 ft), which is marked by the beginning of a white 1,5 m (5 ft) wide band. Until the end of the second white band fuel will flow, equalling a total optimum refuelling range of 6 m (20 ft). For reference purpose, four additional white bands of 0,3 m (1ft) width are provided at 3 m (10 ft) intervals between the basket and the beginning of the optimum refuelling range. (Hose markings and Drogue are at Appendix 3 and 4).
b. Refuelling Heights and Speeds. The AAR height band extends from 5000 ft AGL to FL 350. Refuelling speed limits range from 200 KIAS to 300 KIAS / M 0.80.
c. Maximum Transferable Fuel. Maximum fuel load is 71,900 Kg (@ 0,8 kg/l) or 158,200 lbs. Transferable fuel is dependant on sortie duration and takeoff performance. 44,000 kg (97,000 lbs) of fuel are available for transfer during a 4 hr flight, assuming an average fuel consumption of 5,400 kg/hr and including standard IFR fuel reserves.
d. Fuel Transfer Rate. Maximum transfer rate is 1270 kg/min (2805 lbs/min) per side depending on speed and receiver fuel state.
e. Regulated Fuel Pressure. Hose end pressure is regulated to 50 psi (+/- 5 psi).
f. Fuel Types Available for AAR
(1) Primary fuel type is F34.

(2) Alternate fuels depend upon airfield of loading, tanker can accept JET A1, JET A, JP 8, JP 5, JP 6, JET B.
g. Receiver Types Certified. See Appendix 7.
h. Lighting
(1) AAR Equipment Signal Lighting. Two clusters of signal lights are installed in mountings at the end of each AAR pod left and right of the hose tunnel. Each cluster has two types of signal lights, normal (overt) and infra-red (covert). They are arranged in a vertical row from top to bottom. (See Appendix 6).
(a) Normal Signal lights (Overt). The overt signal lights are red, amber and green high intensity LEDs. These lights do not show infra-red radiation of a level which would impair the use of NVGs.
(b) Infra-red lights (Covert). A set of three infra-red lights are included in each light cluster. These lights are visible to NVGs and indicate the same signal function as the normal lights using an infra-red pattern.
The lights signal the following:
Steady Red Do not make contact. (If already in contact, disconnect
immediately until malfunction cleared)
Flashing Red (10sec) on both Breakaway (after breakaway sequence signal light
pods will change to steady red)
Steady Amber Tanker ready for contact
Flashing Amber Fuel flow stops. Hose pushed in too far
Flashing Amber Fuel still flowing. Hose is pushed in too far forward
(with steady green)
Steady Green Receiver is taking fuel within the refuelling range
Flashing Green Reduced fuel flow (< 50 gal/min) Receiver fuel
tanks full
When conducting night AAR operations, the hose markings near the pod aft fairing will be illuminated by a white light located in the aft fairing, when the AAR advisory lights are dimmed. The drogue canopy is fitted with luminous reflecting beta lights.
(2) Aircraft Lighting
(a) The A 310 MRTT has fully dimmable floodlights installed:
(i) in the refuelling pod pylons, facing inboard and outboard, to illuminate the underside surfaces of the wings, outboard engine nacelles and rear belly.
(ii) in the lower empennage area to illuminate the underside surfaces of the horizontal stabilizers.

(iii) logo lights illuminate the vertical tail.
(b) The A 310 MRTT has sets of electro luminescent (EL) formation lighting strips installed on each side of the:
(i) forward and rear fuselage
(ii) tail cone.
(iii) wing-tip.
(iv) vertical Stabilizer.
(c) Aircraft strobes are red and white combination anti-collision/rendezvous strobe beacons. The white rendezvous beacons have programmable flash patterns. The basic wing-tip navigation lights are; starboard -green/white and port - red/white.
i. Mark Facilities. A coded upper and lower anti collision light is provided, for AAR the strobe lights will be switched off.
j. Dimensions. See appendix 4.
k. RV Aids. The aircraft has the following radio, navigation and RV aids:
(1) VHF, UHF, HF and HQ I/II radios.
(2) VOR, DME, ADF, IRS.
(3) VHF/UHF DF, A/A TACAN with bearing indication for the receiver to the tanker.
l. Limitations. Nil.
3. Receiver Qualification and Currency for Non GAF Receivers
a. Currency requirements. In accordance with the individual national currency requirements/qualification regulations for a basket system tanker.
b. Initial Qualification. In accordance with the individual national currency requirements/qualification regulations for a basket system tanker.
c. Maintenance of AAR currency. In accordance with the individual national currency requirements/qualification regulations for a basket system tanker.
