AIR CARGO PACKAGING TO CHRISTMAS ISLAND Your urgent attention is requested to ensure that all airfreight to Christmas Island is not subjected to delays or extra packaging charges. Goods not in compliance with the following will not be airlifted to Christmas Island. Austasia Airlines will accept no liability at all for non-compliant air cargo consignments. Please refer to the attached instructions for full details of the following points. Austasia Airlines is not able to consider exemptions or special circumstances for any air cargo consignments ex Singapore or Christmas Island. NO DANGEROUS GOODS NO LIVE ANIMALS MAXIMUM ITEM WEIGHT 150 KILOGRAMS AIR CARGO MUST BE PACKAGED FOR MANUAL LOADING AIR CARGO MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MAXIMUM SIZES PACKAGING AND MARKINGS NO DANGEROUS GOODS No dangerous goods can be accepted into or out of Christmas Island on any Austasia Airlines flight. This is a condition of the provision of the aircraft to Austasia Airlines, and must be strictly adhered to. Dangerous goods are articles or substances that possess a significant risk to health, safety and property when transported. Dangerous goods will not be accepted for shipment, and if they are found to be undeclared and included with other goods, will be returned to the shipper at the shipper's expense. The following items constitute dangerous goods; Explosives Gases, flammable or otherwise. Compressed gases or liquids Flammable liquids Flammable solids Spontaneously combustible substances Dangerous when wet substances Oxidising substances Organic peroxides Toxic substances Infectious substances Radioactive substances Corrosives Magnetic materials or substances NO LIVE ANIMALS Carriage of most live animals may constitute a breach of the applicable laws of Christmas Island and airline may be subjected to penalties of fines as will the shipper. No live animals can be accepted into or out of Christmas Island on any Austasia Airlines flight because of legislative and contract requirements. MAXIMUM ITEM WEIGHT 150 KILOGRAMS Specific regulations as to the maximum weight of any single item of air cargo have been applied for carriage of air cargo to Christmas Island. The principal reason for these regulations is the floor density loading of the aircraft in use, and the unique usage of the aircraft into and out of Christmas Island. To ensure that maximum passenger, crew and aircraft safety is considered, no item in excess of 150kgs will be loaded into the Austasia Airlines flight either into or out of Singapore. Air Cargo up to 100 kgs must be boxed. Air cargo in excess of 100 kgs must be palletized and boxed. AIR CARGO MUST BE PACKAGED FOR MANUAL LOADING The aircraft used for transporting passengers and freight to and from Christmas Island does not have bulk loading facilities. Whilst air cargo may reach Singapore in Pallets or containers, it is necessary to unpack goods and manually load them into the cargo holds. This not only limits the maximum item weight on the aircraft, but introduces a requirement that all air cargo is to be specially packaged for manual loading. Perishable air cargo is treated in a separate section of this documentation, however non perishable air cargo must comply with the following basic packaging requirements. All air cargo must be packaged to ensure that there is no risk to personnel or aircraft during loading and unloading. Packaging must be done to ensure that the goods are protected, and that they will not damage other air cargo. All air cargo consignments in excess of 100kgs are to be the subject of notification to Austasia Airlines in advance. Notification should be made by telephone to +618 9164 7984, by fax to +618 9164 7107 or by email to admin@austasiaairlines.com. All items in excess of 100kgs must be palletized and boxed. Pallet construction is important for carriage by air to enable the item to be loaded and offloaded into the aircraft by mechanical means; • All pallets must be constructed of new timber, with no signs of infestation or incursion of borers, ants or other insect or animal infestation. • Pallets must be constructed with a flat base screwed to the pallet frame with all screws recessed into the base. • The preferred base would be 16 to 24 mm plywood, this permits the entire weight load to be spread over the floor area preventing damage to the aircraft. • Pallets should be sized according to the size of the cargo, with no cargo overhanging edges of the pallet • The pallet should then be boxed in a frame of plywood, timber or heavy cardboard and strapped. • Cargo within the box must be solidly secured to the pallet using strapping or other means to prevent movement. • Pallet sizes should be a minimum of 500mm x 500mm. For over-length items please refer to the cargo door dimensions chart on our website : www.austasiaairlines.com/cargo or contact the Operations Manager at : admin@austasiaairlines.com Air cargo consignments not properly packaged will be repackaged by the airline at the shippers’ expense and may not be delivered on the expected flight when repackaging occurs. PACKAGING – GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Aircraft operating to Christmas Island are currently Airbus A319/A320 series aircraft. These aircraft cargo holds are manually loaded and the aircraft do not carry pallets or cargo containers. Goods that may be transported from international ports are usually packed to suit loading on to large pallets. Packaging for this transportation is not suitable for manually loaded aircraft. All goods for manually loaded aircraft holds must be boxed and in case of heavy items must be palletized and boxed. Goods must be packed so that there are no protruding parts which can cause damage to the aircraft, or persons handling the goods, or impede the movement of other air cargo during loading or unloading. PACKAGE MARKINGS All packages must be marked to “NAME OF RECEIVER OF CARGO” and “CHRISTMAS ISLAND” All packages must be marked to indicate the box number e.g. “1 of 2”, or “1 / 2” All packages should be marked with the airway bill number from the port of origin. Goods that are of a fragile nature should be marked with “FRAGILE” labels Good that have been shipped and paid as priority must have “PRIORITY” labels. AIR CARGO MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MAXIMUM SIZES Item sizes are restricted by the size of the cargo hold doors, which whilst large compared to other aircraft of this size, still require attention in order to ensure that a bulky items can be loaded. The table below indicates maximum sizes for consignments on the Airbus A319/320 series of aircraft. There is some latitude in these maximum sizes, but only where advance approval is sought from Austasia Airlines, who will then contact the aircraft owner to obtain special approval for carriage. |
