The speaking exam follows the structure of ROUTINE RADIOTELEPHONY, NON-ROUTINE RADIOTELEPHONY, DISCUSSION OF GENERAL AVIATION TOPICS. In every class that is given, these skills MUST be practiced. TEACHING METHOD: Teach the necessary vocabulary, practice pronunciation, simulated practice, discussion. Remember that the class must be interactive – the students must do the talking, not the teacher. EXAM STRUCTURE PART ONE – ROUTINE RADIOTELEPHONY PREFLIGHT – TAKEOFF – DEPARTURE – EN ROUTE – DESCENT - LANDING PART TWO – NON-ROUTINE RADIOTELEPHONY PREFLIGHT Incorrect directions, closed taxiways, aircraft ahead blocking taxiway, debris on the runway/taxiway, facing the wrong way for taxi, intersection departure or full length runway, delay, mechanical problems. TAKEOFF Aborted/rejected takeoff, request maintenance, carry out check list, request tow back to parking bay, engine failure, request transfer passengers to another plane, bird strike, encounter bad weather. DEPARTURE/ EN ROUTE Encounter light/mild/severe turbulence, bomb on board, bomb explodes on board, problem with the door seal, ATC requests observe another aircraft not responding by radio, contact another aircraft, unconscious pilots, ATC requests investigate an emergency beacon, observe a ship (oceanliner) in trouble, contact the ship in trouble, dump/jettison fuel, request deviation due to weather, encounter thunderstorms, encounter lightning strike, decompression/depressurisation, engine failure, wait for military escort aircraft, unable to see instruments, use torch to see instruments, use binoculars to observe other aircraft, unable to turn right/left due，lightning strike. DESCENT/LANDING Low visibility, another aircraft on runway, go around, non-retracted landing gear, make a low pass, DME failure, emergency landing, request radar vectors. PART THREE – DISCUSSION OF PART TWO AND GENERAL AVIATION TOPICS GRAMMAR – Past Tense, Comparison, Future tense, Conditionals (If…..I would, I will, I would have) - Airports - Tell me about two airports that you are familiar with, and tell me why you think one of them is better than the other? - Aircraft - Pilot’s work/training - Airlines - Weather - What weather conditions do you encounter on the routes that you fly? Which of these is the most serious? Why? - What are some of the problems with communicating with ATC in different countries which have different accents when speaking English? - What are some of the issues your company will face during the next five to ten years? - How has a pilot’s job role changed during the last twenty years? - How have aircraft changed during the last 20 years? - Do you think the job of a pilot is a stressful one? Why? - How do you handle stress? - Some people say that computers never make mistakes and therefore make aviation safer. What do you think? - How would you feel if ATC was a computer, and you as a pilot had to communicate with it to maintain separation and receive instructions? - What could cause pilots to lose consciousness during a flight? - What are some of the reasons why an aircraft would have to divert? - There are some areas in which radio coverage is very poor or non-existent. How do you feel about flying through these areas? - What responsibilities do pilots have towards other aircraft (in nearby airspace)? - Have you ever had/experienced any hydraulic problems? - Have you ever had/experienced any electrical problems?
