REVISION: 04, Oct 01/2007
SUBJECT:
ATA CHAPTER:
AIRCRAFT TYPE:
APPLICABILITY:
1. PURPOSE:
Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) caused by In Flight
Entertainment (IFE) systems
A320 Family & A330/A340 Family
All
Airbus has identified on A320Family & A330/A340 Family production aircraft, possible Electro
Magnetic Interferences (EMI) affecting 8.33 and/or 25 kHz VHF operation.
This SIL gives for each IFE system tested, the VHF frequency channel (8.33 and/or 25kHz) at which
the EMI was observed with all passengers doors closed (flight condition), the position of the affected
VHF, the observation regarding the VHF behaviour when EMI is present. For each system, the
improved units are also listed whenever available.

Note : The discovery of EMI on given VHF channels, during Airbus testing does not mean that
in service airplanes will necessarily have interference on the same VHF channels..
2.1 Panasonic System MPES
VHF frequency

Solution:
Panasonic developed new equipments (Main Multiplexer, SEB, PES harness) in order to address the EMI
interference which affect the VHF at the frequency 132.525 Mhz:
- MMUX PN RDAX1301-5A
- SEB PN RDAX4432-01
- Seat to seat harness PN RDAM7933-xx
- WDB to seat harness PN RDAM7934-xx
2.2 Panasonic System eFX
VHF frequency

122.875 1/2/3 Squelch opens or does not close
Investigations are undergoing at Panasonic both in laboratory and on the aircraft to determine the faulty
equipment and launch corrective actions.
2.3 Rockwell Collins APAX130
No EMI has been observed
2.4 Rockwell Collins P@ves
No EMI has been observed

Investigations are undergoing at Thales to determine the faulty equipment and launch corrective actions.
3. A330/A340 Family aircraft
Note : The discovery of EMI on given VHF channels, during Airbus testing does not mean that in
service airplanes will necessarily have interference on the same VHF channels.
3.1 Panasonic System 2000 (PESC PN RDAA1001-XX and associated units)
VHF frequency
channel VHF affected Observation
119.700 1 Background noise
135.475 1/3 Background noise
135.480 1 Background noise
Solution :
The 3 channels are cleared of any EMI with the following improved unit PNs made available by
Panasonic. For newly defined versions, these units equip Airbus A/C with System 2000 from the
production line. This has been confirmed by tests performed on A/C with all doors closed as well as with
door 1LH opened.

Solution :
All above channels are cleared of any EMI with the following improved unit PNs made available by
Panasonic. These units equip any new Airbus A/C with System 2000E from production line. This has
been confirmed by tests performed on A/C with all doors closed as well as with door 1LH opened.
EMI improved EPESC : PN RD-AA1007-03
EMI improved EVSCU : PN RD-AA5007-13
EMI improved ASEB : PN RD-AA4304-51
EMI improved VASEB : PN RD-AA4502-45
EMI improved IVASEB : PN RD-AA4xx2-1x
EMI improved EADB : PN RD-AA2013-xx
These units are available since September 1998.
3-2-1 Retrofit :
For already delivered A/C, retrofit plan is to be agreed with Panasonic
However should a customer be affected by any of these EMI, they are advised to change the (E)PESC and
(E)VSCU as a first step. Should EMI remain on some frequencies they can then agree with Panasonic the
best way to proceed with rest of the units
3.3 Panasonic System 2000E Standard Interface Units (EPESC RDAA1007-XX and associated units)
- No EMI has been observed.
3.4 Panasonic System 3000 (I)
VHF frequency
channel VHF affected Observation
133.335 1 Squelch breaks
122.865 1 Squelch breaks or hangs
Solution:
It may happen that those disturbances are observed with doors closed. The CMT panel PN RD-AA8046-
11 included in the VCC is the source of the disturbances which are also dependent on other factors (i.e.
location of the VCC, wiring, VHF receiver, etc).
Newly introduced CMT PN RD-AA8046-32 clearly improves the EMI situation.

No EMI has been observed
3.8 SONY P@ssport system
- No EMI has been observed.
3.9 Thales Top Series i4000
- No EMI has been observed.
3.10 Thales Top Series i5000
- No EMI has been observed.
4. RECOMMENDATIONS:
Should any customer encounter EMI due to the IFE system, on any VHF channel once the 8.33 KHz
channel spacing is activated on their airplane, they are invited to report their findings to Airbus Customer
Services Engineering (SEE61 ).
In case that EMI are experienced with door closed (flight conditions), refer to FCOM 3.04.23.
In addition, the following TSM tasks have been revised
- A320Family TSM task 23-12-00-810-827 (May 01/06 revision) - Loss of one or more VHF
transmission or Reception functions / channels
- A330/A340 Family TSM task 23-12-00-810-819 (Jul 01/06 revision) - Loss of one or more VHF
transmission or Reception functions / channels
They mention the following note:
Note: “Electro Magnetic Interferences from the Passenger Entertainment| System (PES) can cause the
perturbation in reception of one or more VHF Channels. Refer to SIL 23-026.”
