RNP Generally
RNAV terminology
• RNAV : A comprehensive term for all types
of area navigation.
• B-RNAV: Basic RNAV. The requirements for
B-RNAV stipulate a navigation accuracy of 5
nm from the published track for 95% of the
time. B-RNAV is intended for enroute
navigation in European airspace.
RNAV terminology
• P-RNAV : Precision RNAV. The
requirements for P-RNAV stipulate a
navigation accuracy of 1 nm from the
published track for 95% of the time. P-RNAV
is intended for terminal navigation in
European airspace. Present examples of
where P-RNAV is in force in Scandinavia are
STAR ENBR, STAR ENZV
RNAV terminology
• RNP RNAV: Required Navigation
Performance RNAV. RNAV with further
navigation performance requirements than
accuracy which guarantees that the aircraft
will stay within stipulated airspace.
• RNP AR: RNP Authorization:RNAV
approach that require approval for specific
airport from respective country authority.
RNAV terminology
• GPS APP A type of non precision approach
using area navigation giving the lateral path
for the approach. Not approved to fly in
VNAV. One example is EDDM GPS
approach.
• APV – Approach with vertical guidance. A
type of approach with vertical guidance
which do not qualify as a precision
approach. RNP RNAV is an APV.

• Aircraft must have demonstrated RNP
capability
• RNP RNAV qualified Flight Crew
• Approved instrument approach procedure
loaded from the FMC database
• Operational approval in the SAS Airline

FMC Position Update
• In-flight the FMC position is continually
updated from the GPS, navigation radios
and IRS.
• Update priority during RNAV approach
– GPS
– Two or more DME stations (except INN)
– One VOR with a co-located DME (except
INN)
– IRS (except INN)
Symbology
Display of Navigation Source
• LNAV/VNAV is
displayed as
navigation source
when either AFDS
(Autopilot Flight
Director System),
LNAV or VNAV mode
is engaged.
Lateral NPS on PFD
• NPS pointer: Indicate
lateral path relative to
the airplane. (X-track
error)
• White ANP bar indicates
ANP. As the ANP value
increases the ANP bars
extend towards the
centre.
• The white vertical index
is fixed and represents
current FMC lateral RNP

Lateral NPS on PFD
• RNP on cruise is typically 2
nm. Entering airspace with
lower RNP (ex. during descent
Fl 150) is indicated on the
MCDU and on the NPS
deviation scale. The index now
represents 1 nm.
• The room to manoeuvre is
now considerably less than
before.
• The RNP approach (0.3) is
automatically entered as the
FMC approaches the FAF or
at a point programmed in the
nav data base.

• Magenta Vertical
NPS pointer
indicates vertical
path relative to the
airplane.
• Vertical ANP Bars
indicate vertical
ANP the same way
as lateral ANP.

• Complete normal approach preparations
• Check that actual airport temperature is
higher than minimum indicated on IAL
• Select the RNAV approach procedure
from DEP/ARR page
• Never build your own procedure or
change any values for the FAF waypoint
or beyond.
• Temp adjust minima

LEGS page against chart.
• G/P angle displayed.
• Altitudes.
• Track and distance from
FAF to RW.
• Do not use the procedure if
errors are found.
