Fuel Filter Spinning Issue
Background
• Four events reported of fuel filter spinning in the gear housing MFP
• Investigation revealed flurosilicone seals instead of fluorocarbon seals
 Other CFM56 engine models use flurosilicon seals
Investigation
• Main fuel filter end cap heavy worn out
• Main fuel filter exhibited missing packing o-ring
• Main fuel filter equipped with non conforming packing o-rings
(fluorosilicone seals instead of fluorocarbon seals)

Corrective Actions
• Customer sensitized through AOW n°99/CFM56/358 and Fleet
Highlite articles issued in Jul 99, Sep 99 and Dec 00
• Main fuel filter installation procedure reviewed and released through AMM
73-11-10 to avoid packing o-rings main fuel filter damage at installation
• Boeing message number n°M-7200-00-03047 issued in Dec 2000 to check
and replace fuel filter element packing o-rings
• Main fuel filter packing O-rings standardized (fluorocarbon “viton”) for all
CFM56 engine models
 To avoid configuration error in mixed fleet
 Released through service bulletins (-3 : 73-0137, 5A: 73-0160, 5B:
73-084, 5C: 73-0101, 2C:73-084) since May 2001

Corrective Actions (Final Fix)
• New main fuel filter element modifications
 Fluorocarbon packing o-rings directly installed on the fuel filter element
by Supplier
 Anti rotation of the main fuel filter element
– No change in pump housing
 Other modifications introduced to take into account of end cap fuel filter
fretting wear marks (cover side)
• Engine testing completed
 No fuel filter rotation observed
• Expected release early 2nd Qtr 2002 (CFM56-7B S/B category 5)
 New fuel filter element PN: 219946 (old fuel filter element PN: 218134 not
procurable in spare)
