Objective of the group:
Write the specification for a powerplant course delivered under JAR 147
requirements, in terms of theoretical and practical content, duration and
examination.
Context:
To be sure that all items are covered in case of:
• a stand alone powerplant course.
• a powerplant course included in the entire aircraft course.
Definition of the powerplant
Powerplant package comprises the “Bare Engine”, “Engine Build-Up” and the
“ Nacelle systems ”.
“Aircraft/Engine interfaces” topics are part of the powerplant.

POWERPLANT COURSE CONTENTS
The powerplant course is built up with:
• the respective topics treated for each system for:
• “General Familiarization Level 1”,
• “Ramp & Transit Level 2”,
• “Line & Base Level 3”.
• the powerplant type training shall be in accordance with the JAR 66
Appendix 3 for type training standards for its theoretical and practical
elements.
• the powerplant type training requires a combined analysis by the aircraft and
powerplant manufacturers together to determine the adequate training
environment for the performance of the representative maintenance tasks.

POWERPLANT COURSE PRE-REQUISITES
The trainee should have the necessary level of knowledge:
• by having completed the JAR66 basic training or equivalent,
• or hold an academic degree in an aeronautical discipline, supplemented by
some experience on jet powered aircraft.

POWERPLANT THEORETICAL
The program for adequate theoretical training shall cover:
• Location & purpose of components,
• description & operation of systems and sub-systems,
• understanding of troubleshooting philosophy,
• human factors.
The theoretical training element is described in
Appendix I of the specification

 describes the powerplant generally and its drainage,
 describes the hazards linked to the operation with thrust,
 describes the nacelle assembly, the engine, the mounts, the A/C systems
integrated into the powerplant .
Notes:
it includes the access panels, the opening / actuating systems that are part of the
nacelle assembly,
it includes the powerplant connections to the pylon .
MEDIA :
Instructor led presentation or CBT.
CONTENTS to describe :
for the POWERPLANT GENERAL :
 the airflow,
 the hazard area,
 the wind limitations,
 the drain system,
for the NACELLE ASSEMBLY :
 the inlet cowl,
 the Fan cowls,
o the opening /closing of the cowls,
o the latches ( its rigging ),
 the Thrust Reverser cowls,
o the opening /closing of the cowls,
o the latches ( their rigging ),
 the Thrust Reverser actuation system,
o the reverse thrust control lever system and its interlocks,
o the system operation and control,
o the system components description and location,
o the de-activation before maintenance,
o the de-activation before flight,

The program for practical training shall satisfy:
• locating the component,
• handling of powerplant sub-systems that require safe maintenance
practices,
• hands-on practice, such as the change of LRU ’s, if it requires special
precautions or techniques during the removal and installation process,
• if needed, the correct use of specific technical documentation,
• if needed, the correct use of on-board maintenance tools.
The Practical training element is described in
Appendix II of the specification

COURSE DURATION
The powerplant course duration criteria shall take into account:
• the JAR 66 regulatory statement for the agreed training content developed,
• the guidelines established by the industry .
(such as EAMTC working groups)
The manufacturers shall agree on recommended common type
course content and course duration, for B1 and B2 courses.
• B1 powerplant module is 30 Hrs
• B2 powerplant module is 6 Hrs

EXAMINATION
• JAR requirements are a minimum of 2 questions per ATA chapter.
• Powerplant exam model is based on 30 questions split in line maintenance for
2/3 and General Familiarization for 1/3, spread over all powerplant ATA
chapters.
