Booster Spool Wear
Background
Glazing/wear marks evidenced on the
forward flange of the booster spool
at each fan blade position
As of today, 28 engines received
special inspection
 11 engines with no abnormal
condition found
 14 engines found with light
marks of wear noticed on
some areas
 3 engines found with deep
wear
– Up to 4 mils

Engineering Activity completed
 Glazing/wear marks caused by contact with fan blade shank aft
surface during wind milling and engine start sequence (<33 rpm)
 Rig and engine tests completed in an effort to minimize wear in
future operation
 3000 cycles cumulated during engine test
– 3.256.000 rotation cumulated rig test
 Seven configurations tested
– Best result obtained with periodic lubrication of contact area
 Booster spool fwd flange and fan blade shank wear level
significantly reduced (3x)

Corrective Actions
 CESM No.005 updated to implement periodic lubrication of the Fan Blade
shank rear surface
– Revision 001 issued in April, 2002
 Manual limits extended in effort to minimize in-service burden
– AMM revision issued in February, 2002
 Wear is permitted if not more than 0.008 in. (0,20 mm) deep
– New limit extension under review December, 2002
 Repair procedure being developed to restore part condition at piece-part
level
– Estimated completion date December, 2002
