February 2002 WTT face to face CFMI / Boeing Proprietary Information - Unauthorized Disclosure, Use, or Export are Prohibited 1 HPC Stage 1 and 2 Spool Life February 2002 WTT face to face CFMI / Boeing Proprietary Information - Unauthorized Disclosure, Use, or Export are Prohibited 2 1-2 Spool Life Extension Status • CFM56 HPCR 1-2 Spools have experienced edge of contact cracking – Blade vibration leads to fretting on pressure face – Fretting leads to crack initiation at edge of contact – Low stress is consistent with the shallow cracks found in spools cut up to date February 2002 WTT face to face CFMI / Boeing Proprietary Information - Unauthorized Disclosure, Use, or Export are Prohibited 3 1-2 Spool Life Extension Status • At time of initial certification for -7, CFMI proposed a 20,000 cycle Manual Limit for the long dovetail 1-2 Spool – Minimum calculated LCF life is >100,000 cycles for edge of contact location – A restriction was placed on the limit at initial certification based on contact cracking in other engine line • Result: 1-2 Spool Manual Limit is currently 13,000 cycles February 2002 WTT face to face CFMI / Boeing Proprietary Information - Unauthorized Disclosure, Use, or Export are Prohibited 4 • CFMI has an approved plan with the Agencies to allow removal of the 13,000 cycle restriction on the CFM56-7B 1-2 Spool Manual Limit – Plan utilizes analysis and data from 2 field run -7B spools between 8,000 and 10,000 cycles to substantiate LLP life extension – Timing precedes first field engine reaching 13,000 cycles • Plan does not require any special inspections on the -7 spool to reach 20,000 cycle life limit 1-2 Spool Life Extension Status February 2002 WTT face to face CFMI / Boeing Proprietary Information - Unauthorized Disclosure, Use, or Export are Prohibited 5 • First -7B high time spool has been removed and inspected – ESN 875-134, with 1-2 Spool GWNBM937 TSN 12,380, CSN 8879 – Part received both standard FPI inspection, and high sensitivity 10X white light inspection - both inspections showed NO indications – Second spool identified and will be removed Feb 2002 • Current fallout estimate against current manual limit is 1Q2003 1-2 Spool Life Extension Status |
