WHEEL WELL FIRE
"A wheel well fire warning can not be caused by overheated brakes alone (…)"
This a Boeing statement confirmed in a Boeing symposium…
Overheated brakes can contribute to a wheel well fire if they become hot enough to ignite the
tires, hydraulic fluid or other flammable substances. However, analysis by Boeing indicates
that overheated brakes alone can not generate enough heat to trigger the wheel well fire
detection system.
In most cases extending the gear to cool the brakes and wheel well is effective at coping with
the fire condition. Even so there have been a few incidents where extending the gear did not
resolve the problem. One such example was an incident where the electrical lead to a
hydraulic pump shorted and burned a small hole through the hydraulic pressure line and
ignited the spraying fluid. After the gear was extended, the fire warning went out but the fluid
from the ruptured line continued to burn.
Wheel well fire indications should be treated with the same respect as other fire indications.
This includes the requirement to land at the nearest suitable airport. The landing gear should
be left extended unless it is absolutely necessary to retract it in order to reach for
performance considerations.
