Background
• Purpose of Burner Staging Valve
– Intended to prevent flame out during throttle decel on
SAC engines
– Opens to send fuel to the 10 staged fuel nozzles,
increasing the fuel/air ratio

Background
• Burner Staging Valve has been eliminated from –7 engines
• Reasons for removal
– BSV not needed in –7 engine (Applies to SAC engines only)
– Potential source of future in-service faults and maintenance
– 11 BSV faults last year out of ~265 engines with BSV in use
– 41 HMU removals last year due to BSV faults out of ~265 engines
• Benefits of BSV removal
– Designed out two “no-dispatch failures”  improved reliability
– Reduced maintenance and repair costs
– Simplify fuel system / weight reduction
– Reduced inventory
• Production deletion beginning 02/19/1999 (ESN 876-291 and higher)
• Field Removal (SB 73-044)
– Can be deactivated or completely deleted (recommended)

Deactivation
• BSV deactivation
– BSV physically installed but turned off
– ECU monitors BSV for errors but does not use
• Requirements for deactivation
– Large Bore Transient Bleed Valve (SB 72-095)
• Improves compressor operability margin
• Prerequisite for removing BSV
– Rating Plug: Deactivates BSV
– ECU software: Allows engine operation with or without BSV
– HMU P07 upgrade: All -7 engines are currently P07 or
higher

Fleet Status
Current BSV status of CFM56-7 fleet
• 131 engines with small bore TBV (BSV must be activated)
• Phased introduction for BSV deletion after large bore TBV
implemented
– Software introduction
– Rating plug introduction
– BSV removal
• Engines with large bore TBV (with BSV installed)
– 20 engines with BSV activated
– 54 engines with BSV deactivated
• All engines delivered post February 1999 (ESN 876-291 and higher)
have large bore TBV with BSV removed
Some production engines have BSV still
installed although not necessary.
