 Other Runway Markings
 • Spain also has a red and white signal, called marking with mandatory
 instructions,
 • It will be used when it is impossible to place any mandatory instructions
 signal,
 • It will also be used on TWY wider that 60m

 • The only additional markings being considered by the UK CAA are the
 following ones :
 • These are trial markings only implemented on 2 runway entrances at
 London Heathrow
 • No global plan in UK so far to extend these markings

 • In France, there is a specific regulation about "runway ahead" and "no
entry", which describes their use and their characteristics.
 • There is no obligation to use such markings but, if they are used, they shall
be done according to existing regulation.
 • This is recommended particularly if incidents were known but there is no
 overall deployment plan.
 • Use of these markings is deployed in several airports:

  aris-LFPG, Paris-LFPO, Toulouse-LFBO… Content - Airbus Supplemental Needs 19/05/2009 Page 10

 Runway Ahead
 • « RWY AHEAD » marking might be painted when it is necessary to
reinforce diurnal signaling on the last holding point before runway,
particularly in case of runway crossing that constitute a doublet of parallel
 runways

 No Entry
 • “No Entry” marking is painted on surface as a complement to existing
signage if it is necessary to reinforce signalling of a holding point before a
runway, particularly if runway width is more than 60m,
 • This marking will be consist in a white marking over a red background.
Letters shall be 4 m high.

 • Runway markings, especially the runway ahead marking, has been an
interesting development over the last few years.
 • This marking is not currently designed or installed to an international
standard, therefore many combinations exist such as: "RUNWAY AHEAD“,
"RWY AHEAD“ or "02-20" (The runway designator) plus a few more.
 • The Aerodrome panel of ICAO is about to sit and agree a standard that
could be rolled out through their ANNEX 14, however, until this happens we
will continue to see a variety of taxiway markings.
 • The "NO ENTRY“ marking is a non-standard sign. It is used to reinforce the
 restriction.

 Airbus Supplemental Needs
 • In addition to Honeywell proposals and outcomes of “content” subgroup,
Airbus identifies the potential following needs:
 Runway vertical profile
 Surface type after shoulders
Identification of rubber presence on runway parts (to cover some
 NOTAMs)
Turnpads suitability for limiting aircraft (such as A340-600)
Culverts with max allowed aircraft weight
 ILS interferences areas
 • All these needs are not certain but Airbus would like to know if it
could be captured in an Airport Database, as it might be useful for
 some applications.
