Background
 Several reported cases where booster vanes were
found with outer shroud coating (Metco 601NS) missing
– Condition was discovered during routine on-wing or
in-shop inspection
 No associated operational consequences
reported
– Other CFM56 engine models affected
– Cases found on high time engines
– Missing coating often extends locally on lower side
at 6 o’clock position

Engineering assessment
 Root cause investigation - Completed
– Abradable Aluminum particles deteriorated by
Chlorine, sulfur
– Booster drain system not a predominant factor
 Potential impact on engine performance
– Effect on Booster stall margin to be demonstrated
 Stall line, and operating line slightly impacted
 To be confirmed by engine test

Corrective Action Plan
 Extend serviceable limit when missing coating is noticed to
minimize in-service burden
– New AMM limits to be issued based on engine test results
 Continue in-service extension could be granted
– Current AMM limit
 100 cm2 [15.5 sq-in] of missing material
 Overserviceability of 100 hours is available
– Current ESM limit
 Not serviceable
 Repair procedure available to restore part condition
 Evaluation of a new abradable material bond coat
– Alternate solution being evaluated through corrosion tests
 Long term activity
